A Must-Have Discovery: Lantau Island, Hongkong & Ngong Ping 360

Do you know that Lantau Island is?
http://www.hongkong.net/guide/lantau-island.html

1.  Lantau Island, on the mouth of the Pearl River is the LARGEST island in Hongkong and the sixth largest island in China. Also called is Lantao Island. The old name is given by the locals is Lantau Peak.

The island is located 8 kilometers west of Hongkong Island, but these two parts of the British colony DIFFER as heaven an earth. The reason is that, until recently, to be exact till the end of the 1990's, Lantau was cut-off from the continent and ferries were the only transport.  Hongkong island has long been connected with Kowloon Peninsula by the network of road tunnels and MTR lines, and is not perceived as the piece of a land cut-off from the continent.

But in 1998, north of Lantau Island on Chek Lap Kok was built the state-of-the-art Hongkong International Airport. Together with the new airport had to build a suspension bridge that connects the island and the New Territories, and the Tsing Ma Bridge was opened in May 1997.  It was named after two of the islands that it connects, Tsing Yi and Ma Wan.  The bridge is the part of Lantau Link, and has six lanes of automobile traffic and two rail tracks.  Today, the island is easily accessible by land transport, such as cars, taxis, buses or MTR.

2.  Being twice the size of Hongkong Island, the population of Lantau is 10 times lower. Small communities are scattered all over the island; each with its OWN UNIQUE FLAIR.Since the airport was built, north-western Lantau has been developed more, and most of the residents live in condominiums or high-rise buildings.

3.  The highest peak in the mountain range is Phoenix Mountain, standing 935 meters (102, 2 yards) high.

Siukit walked with us to take the 30 mins MTR Tung Chung Line going to Ngong Ping.  We just love walking in Hongkong.  The streets are clean, the MTR is clean, the grounds are clean and people are disciplined, walking in one direction.  On the escalator, the people stand on the right and the left side is intended for people who wish to walk.  Street signs are readable and everywhere.  That made us find the place easier.
Traveling with this little girl has been an amazing journey!

Look how clean the floor is...we sat while waiting for mom and Andrei

It's easy to sit down waiting like this because the floor is clean

finally found the Ngong Ping 360

We found Ngong Ping easily unlike Ocean Park. hahaha. Ness stood in line to present our vouchers at the counter to redeem our ticket.  Andrei found out it lacked one more. Mom and Ness went back to get the lacking 1 piece.  We then excitedly stood in line to ride the Ngong Ping Cable Car. Ness and I only bought the one ride so we can experience the bus ride view after.

From Hong Kong Island to Big Buddha / Po Lin Monastery / Ngong Ping 360
If visiting any of these attractions then the train is by far the best way to get there.

1. From Hong Kong Island take a train to Hong Kong Station
by following the Island Line to Central,
2. Then walking to the interconnected Hong Kong Station.
3. The trains run on the high speed Tung Chung line all the way to the terminus at Tung Chung. As there are few stops on this line the journey is fast indeed and within 20 minutes you will find yourself alighting at the modern shopping complex of Tung Chung.
4. Leave the MTR station via Exit B and follow the signs for a 2 minute walk to the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car.
5. This will take you directly to the summit next to the Big Buddha.  The cable car ride of course gives great views over the island, and takes about 20 or 30 minutes.

1. Alternatively from the same MTR Exit B walk to the town center
2. And find New Lantao Bus 23 which also goes to the Buddha, but takes almost double the time at around 45 minutes.
